Feedback Control with Wireless Sensing Devices

Our pioneering research in decentralized structural control is not limited to analytical and numerical studies.  With multi-disciplinary expertise in civil and electrical engineering, we push the technology frontier by physically realizing decentralized structural control systems through wireless sensing and embedded computing.  Wireless sensing and control units are developed as the building blocks of a decentralized structural control system.  Each unit, besides collecting and communicating sensor data, can make real-time optimal control decisions and command control devices.

In order to allow multiple decentralized controllers to simultaneously obtain real-time wireless sensor data, multiple information subnets that operate on different wireless channels are successfully implemented.  Incorporating the decentralized control algorithms proposed by us, large-scale shake table experiments are conducted to validate the system performance.  Our latest work has culminated in innovative decentralized feedback architectures with information overlapping among subnets to significantly improve control performance.  The tests were conducted in National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), Taiwan, as a joint effort with Prof. Chin-Hsiung Loh's group at National Taiwan University.
